 Model of approach

I am a Psychodynamic counsellor and believe that our early life experiences impact our thoughts and behaviour in adulthood.  Through the counsellor/client relationship, Psychodynamic counselling works to help you become more self-aware, gain insight and understanding of your past and present and find ways of doing things differently that are empowering to you. A willingness to test ideas and explore thoughts and themes is what will often lead to discoveries from the unconscious and eventually positive therapeutic change enabling you to take your new insight and apply it to your life outside therapy.

Working creatively

We are born with the ability to imagine, dream, create and play and, as a professional member of the Creative Counsellors Association, I am able and happy to use a variety of creative medium with our counselling work. Whether it be art based, images, toys or sand work, there is a beneficial and meaningful connection between creativity and therapy.

Using creative medium allows you to share, express and think through a process of self-exploration, which may uncover feelings, thoughts and experiences once forgotten. Wherever our minds wander, our thoughts and feelings are important no matter how insignificant they may feel.  Exploring them together helps develop a greater sense of ourselves and our experiences.

Working with children and young people

I tailor my approach to working with children and young people to the individual and work in an ethical and age-appropriate way. I use creative intervention in a relaxed and calm environment.

As a child grows into adolescence, he or she experiences a huge amount of change and young people are often in a very different mental space than adults, due to the physiological and cultural specifics of the individual. There are psychological changes, such as changes in attachment to the care giver and cognitive growth which impact on adolescents emotionally. This can be very distressing, so for a young person, it can be beneficial to explore feelings and thoughts with an adult who is not their parent or carer, in a private, safe space.

I offer face to face counselling to children and face to face counselling, video conferencing and telephone counselling to young people and adults, both short and long term. I also offer Ad-Hoc sessions for those who would like to explore a particular issue in a private and confidential space.

Our individual experiences are unique to us and it can sometimes feel difficult or challenging to make sense of and share what is troubling us and, whilst counselling is a talking therapy where there are no guaranteed outcomes, my aim, working relationally and creatively with a variety of mediums, is to offer a non-judgemental, calm, safe and confidential space (within the limits of the law), where your story can be told and heard.
